HARNESSING AI TO ADVANCE EDUCATION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
📅 Wednesday, 23rd April 2025
⏰ 11:45 – 16:00 Workshop (including lunch)
⏰ 16:00 – 17:00 Focus Group
📍 West Hub, South room, University of Cambridge, Cambridge
Join us for an engaging workshop focused on embedding Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in curriculum design supported by Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Overview
Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) enables learners to acquire the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values necessary to contribute to a sustainable future. It fosters critical thinking, interdisciplinary approaches, and action-oriented learning, making it an essential component of modern education (UNESCO, 2017). However, embedding ESD in curriculum design can be challenging without the adequate guidance and support. Developing guidelines and toolkits is critical to addressing this challenge. Such resources provide academics with structured approaches and actionable strategies to embed ESD across any field of study (Ahmad et al., 2023; Toro-Troconis et al., 2024).
The CoDesignS ESD Framework (CoDesignS ESD, 2021), an open educational resource endorsed by the UNESCO ESD Network (UNESCO, 2023), has been developed in four official languages of the United Nations and widely adopted globally. It simplifies the process of integrating sustainability into curriculum design providing a pedagogic method using a codesign and a co-creation approach (Ahmad et al., 2023; Toro-Troconis, et al., 2023; Toro-Troconis et al., 2024; Varga-Atkins et al., 2024).
To further enhance this process, leveraging emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become increasingly important (UNESCO, 2024). Recognising the transformative potential of AI, the CoDesignS AI Framework was created to assist academics in developing AI teaching competencies.
By the end of this workshop the participants will be able to:
- Discuss the concept of sustainability and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
- Explain what Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is and the difference it can make to curricula and pedagogy in Higher Education (HE).
- Discuss the concept of transformative pedagogies and the application of active learning methodology into learning and teaching practice.
- Discuss and apply the CoDesignS ESD and AI Frameworks and
- Design curriculum elements contributing to embedding education for sustainable development in HE practices supported by the CoDesignS AI Framework and CoDesignS ESD AI Coach.

Who is the workshop for?
This workshop is designed for academics and colleagues who support teaching and learning in Higher Education and want to explore how to integrate Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) into curriculum design with the support of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Focus Group
Participants are invited to join a focus group discussion after the workshop from 16:00 – 17:00. Participants will be encouraged to share specific examples of their interactions with the CoDesignS ESD AI Coach and CoDesignS AI Framework, reflecting on the accuracy, relevance, and usefulness of the guidance provided. Discussions will also explore participants’ experiences, perceptions, and any observed shifts in their approach to ESD and use of AI as a result of using the CoDesignS AI Coach and frameworks. Participants taking part in the Focus Group discussion will receive a £30 reimbursement as a token of appreciation for their time.
If you are interested in joining the Focus Group, please complete the section relevant to the Focus Group in the registration form below.
